WARNING- If you haven’t read the last Harry Potter book this might spoil some things for you so if you really would rather read it first then please do not read this! You have been warned!

Disclaimer: I do not own the Harry Potter characters; they belong to the ingenious J.K.Rowling. This is a one-shot for a contest; it is placed seven years after book seven… I’ve no idea if this is the right math or not for their children but I tried so let’s just pretend :)

A long awaited proposal

"Hermione! Hermione! Hurry up! What on earth are you doing?" Harry yelled, bursting the door open to his and Ginny's room. Ginny had invited Hermione over to their place that evening to help her get ready for her anniversary with Ron. Harry stopped dead in his tracks upon entering the room.
"Honestly Harry! Can't you knock?" Ginny said grumpily as she turned to her newlywed husband, placing her hands on her hips. "What if Hermione had been naked, did you think of that?"
Harry flushed slightly, "You two have been in here for AGES so I figured she'd be presentable by now."
Ginny tutted, "You really don't understand women." Harry chose to remain quiet. He'd just spotted Hermione and was temporarily speechless. Hermione was wearing a red evening gown with a V neck, very simple jewelry and had her hair done up in an elegant knot with a patch waving gracefully over her shoulder.
"Do I look alright?" Hermione asked anxiously, wondering what on earth had gotten Harry to goggle at her like that. Ginny glared at Harry, smacking him in the face and held her hand there pushing him backwards out of the room.
"I think that means you look more than alright." Ginny said somewhat frostily. Hermione smiled apologetically. Turning back to the full-length mirror, she turned in every direction, taking in the work that had spent almost 2 hours. Well, I do hope Ron's reaction is a little more... decent. Hermione thought to herself but then smiled and she knew it would probably not be any better.
Almost half an hour later, her second thought got the better of her. Ron's reaction was almost the same as Harry's, if not worse. Ever since the downfall of Voldemort, it had been seven years since then and at the age of twenty-four Hermione wondered vaguely whether she and Ron would ever get engaged, or even married. Then of course, she reminded herself that it took them seven years to start dating to begin with or rather to even acknowledge their feelings for one another so she didn't mind that Ginny was the one who got married first...much.
"Wow... Hermione... wow." Ron croaked feebly. Hermione marched indignantly out of the flat and down the steps to the waiting taxi. Ron had still not managed to get the hang of cars.
"Good luck, mate." Harry said, winking at his best friend. Ron was almost sweating now and merely nodded, following his girlfriend down the steps.
“Do you think he’ll be alright? Do you think he’ll actually ask her this time?” Ginny asked, looking slightly worried. Ron had attempted to ask for Hermione’s hand two previous occasions and both times had chickened out. The first being their fifth year anniversary and the second their sixth year anniversary.
“I hope so but if it doesn't work this time, then maybe he should try another month or time or day even.” Harry sighed.

      --- At a fancy restaurant ---

“Ron? Are you alright?” Hermione asked worriedly. Ron had been sitting in his seat with a look of utmost concentration on his face, though to Hermione it merely looked like he was about to be sick.
“What?” Ron looked up and wiped some sweat off his face, “Yes I’m fine.” He lied quickly. Of course he wasn’t fine, he was about to ask the woman he loved to marry him, everything was just dandy.
“You’re sure?” she peered at him over the candle-lit table. Ron nodded and tried to look more natural while inside the internal struggle raged on.
This is the girl- the woman- you love! Why can’t you ask her? She kissed me first, she’s always done everything first! Always! Now I have to do it! I love her and it’s really time for me to show her! Ron looked up at Hermione who was sipping her water, all the while with a little crease between her eyebrows. This meant she was still worried even though she’d decided not to say anything.
“Hermione, I’m alright. I think I should go to the bathroom though but I’ll be right back.” Ron said soothingly. Hermione looked up at him, trying to decide what to make of this.
     “Alright.”
As Ron left for the bathroom, the internal battle in Hermione’s head started. Why does he act like this on our anniversary? It was never like this at first, only the past two years he’s started doing this… I wonder? Does he really still love me? I love him so much! It makes me nervous to see him like this… what if? What if he doesn’t love me anymore and just can’t find the words to break up with me? Hermione felt her heart tighten and tears started to well up in her eyes. It can’t end like this! It can’t! I love him… so very much. Hermione began to cry very softly. The waiters passing by with food to other happy couples didn’t notice. No one noticed.

      ~---~

Get a hold of yourself Ronald Weasley! Ron was splashing water in his face in the men’s room. You’re going to make her worry you stupid prat! Hermione DESERVES this, even if she doesn’t deserve me. Ron looked down at the little box and ring inside. It belonged to one of his relatives, he wasn’t sure which one, only that his mother gave it to him and he tried not to think of her face if he would return again without asking Hermione to marry him. Heaving a great big sigh, he gathered what courage he could and stepped out of the men’s room and towards the table that he and Hermione had been seated at. His heart nearly stopped and proceeded to crash through his rib cage as he approached the table.
Hermione was sitting there, crying! What on earth happened while he’d been in the bathroom for only five minutes? And then the doubts returned to him. What if she was crying because she wanted to break up with Ron but couldn’t find the courage to do so? Ron shook his head. No why would she? Why would she doll herself up like that just to dump him? I love her, I love her and I’m not giving her up to ANYONE. A steely glint appeared in his eyes. He’d found the courage he’d been lacking and marched up to the table. Everything around him melted away as he placed one hand on Hermione’s shoulder and knelt beside her. The touch made her jerk and turn quickly to see who had caught her attention unaware and her eyes widened at the sight before her.
Ron’s fears had momentarily escaped him; all he had to do was look at Hermione. And he understood. He understood the look on her face; he recognized the doubt that he continuously saw in his own face. Hermione was in doubt that he would ever ask her this question and it gave him all the more courage to do so.
“Hermione.” Ron said quietly looking into her tear-filled brown eyes.
“I’m so sorry that I’ve been such an idiot. I didn’t mean to make you so sad. I was just afraid. I don’t want to lose you. I was just afraid and now I don’t even know why…” Ron reached into his pocket and pulled out the box, never taking his eyes off her and saw her eyes widen in shock and what could only be amazement. “Hermione… will you do me the great honour of becoming my wife?”
Hermione gave a small gasp and gulped. Words had escaped her, she couldn’t breathe but after hearing Ron’s little speech, she did not want him to worry her tears may have been for other reasons, like what he may have doubted so she nodded and slumped onto his shoulder, sobbing. Only now her tears were tears of joy. She hugged him, her hands finding their way into his hair and suddenly they were kissing.
“Hmm. Wet kisses. Now I know how Harry must have felt with Cho.” Ron said unexpectedly. Hermione gave a watery chuckle and shakily regained composure and leaned back into her chair. Suddenly the noise returned and the two noticed that everyone in the restaurant was applauding. Ron turned beet red and returned to his seat.
“I didn’t notice them.” He mumbled, reaching for his glass of water.
“Me either.” Hermione whispered. Her face which was a delicate shade of pink, turned steadily darker. That night they got a free dinner.

      ~---~

Peering out the window, Ginny spotted the taxi pulling up to the flat.
“Harry! Harry! They’re back!” Ginny called excitedly. Hermione had left her things there since she didn’t want to have to bring hairbrushes, clothes and make-up with her to the restaurant.
Harry came rushing out of the bedroom looking alarmed. “Ginny! What’s the matter?” He hurried over to her. She was looking out the window.
“I have this feeling, like he asked her this time.” She said in the same exuberant voice spying out onto the terrace.
Harry peered out the window too in spite of himself. Ron had always been bad with nerves, he remembered the Quidditch games all too well and Ron’s experience with trying to break up with Lavender Brown, so as much as he adored his friend he also had a little twinge of guilt in thinking Ron may have failed again.
However, looking out the window, the newlywed Potters could tell right away that their hard work had paid off. Ginny was silently having a fit of giggles and Harry couldn’t help grinning from ear to ear. They sneaked over to the door to listen as Ron had walked up the steps with Hermione.
“When should we tell them?” Ron was asking.
“I don’t know, they must be asleep by now.” Hermione whispered. Harry and Ginny looked at each other, evil grins spreading across their faces.
“I mean I really would love to let them know but if it has to wait until tomorrow-“ Hermione was saying.
Without further ado, Ginny yanked the door open, causing Hermione to jump backwards, almost falling down the steps but Ron caught her, his mouth slightly gaped at the sight of his sister and brother-in-law.
     “What the-?” he began.
     “Congratulations!” the two shouted gleefully.
Ron and Hermione exchanged perplexed looks but then sighed and assumed that they already knew.
Hermione smiled, “Well I wonder what they’re congratulating us on Ron?”
Ron grinned back at her, “Yeah I wonder?”
“Oh don’t be stupid.” Ginny said smiling and giving Hermione a hug and then Ron.
Hermione sighed but even though she couldn’t have the opportunity at telling her friends the news herself she was still quite happy. Her face brightened still as she said; “Well I guess this means we’ll be sisters Ginny, now won’t it?”
“Ah.” murmured Harry as comprehension dawned. Ginny squealed and hugged Hermione again. This was why she was so excited; she was getting a sister. “Does that make us brother and sister too?” Harry asked with a smirk.
Hermione merely rolled her eyes at Harry as she was still being crushed by Ginny. Harry turned to Ron instead who was looking very fondly at his sister and fiancée.
“Well done mate.” Harry said, clapping Ron on the back. “I wasn't sure if you could do it but I’m really proud you did though.”
Ron merely nodded and patted Harry on the back in thanks.
Ginny finally let go of Hermione and straightened up. “Well we should get out of the cold and inside or we’ll freeze.”
“I was going to take the cab but I guess you’ll be wanting to celebrate then?” Ron said and took a step back eyeing his sister’s expression. “Right, I’ll go pay him and tell him to be off.”
Ron hurried away and Ginny ushered her husband and Hermione into the house. She turned and saw Ron hurrying back up the steps.
“That was fast.” She said, eyeing him in wonder.
“Yeah well, I don’t want to waste any more time with Hermione, I want to be with her as much as possible.”
Ginny smirked and patted Ron on the back. “I’m really proud of you. She’s been worrying about you and her. A lot.”
Ron had the grace to accept this. He realized now more than ever that he’d really blown it the past two years. “Yeah I really want to make it up to her.” The two redheads walked back into the flat to celebrate.

      --- Several months later ---

“I can’t believe you’re pregnant!” Hermione said goggling at her sister-in-law to be.
Ginny blushed furiously. “Shh! Don’t worry the dress still fits!” Ginny was to be Hermione’s maid-of-honor at the wedding.
“It’s not the dress I’m worried about.” Hermione said eyeing Ginny suspiciously. “You haven’t told Harry yet have you?”
Ginny made a guilty face, a trait most unlike her. “Well, no… not yet.”
Hermione folded her arms and gave Ginny a look. “Just why have you not? Is it so you won’t take the spotlight off Ronald and I?”
Ginny made a face. “Hermione stop speaking like that and yes, a little bit but I’m also a little worried that having a baby for being married for almost two years is too soon?”
Hermione shrugged. “I wouldn’t know about that but I’m sure Harry will be thrilled! He’s always wanted a family.”
Ginny looked up and for the first time that day she looked more relaxed. “Yes you’re right. But I’ll make sure to tell him after the two of you are on your honeymoon.”
“What? And miss his reaction? I think you should do it before we leave for the honeymoon!” Hermione teased.
“Hey you two, what’re you chatting about? It’s nearly time.” Mr. Weasley said, poking his head in the door.
“Dad! You and Harry REALLY need to learn to knock.” Ginny said indignantly, getting up and going over to greet her father.
“In an hour or so, I’ll have two beautiful daughters.” Mr. Weasley said fondly. Ginny rolled her eyes and pushed her father out the door.

      ~---~

Ron was standing nervously at the altar with Harry, his best man.
“This is the hardest part but you guys are crazy for each other, nothing to worry about.” Harry murmured. Rather than feel relieved at this, Ron’s worries merely increased as they normally do when such occasions happen. Ron took a deep breath and started gazing around the church to take his mind off of his nerves. His family sitting to one side, a very large family of wizards and witches compared to the very few muggles on the bride’s side. How odd this wedding must seem to them, being in the presence of wizards and witches.
Ron studied the Grangers faces, his parent-in-laws to be and all the other faces of Hermione’s family. He wondered vaguely if she were the first muggle-born or if she had some family member in the past or even future who may also turn out to be as smart as Hermione.
While his mind wandered, he suddenly snapped out of his reverie as soon as he heard the music start. And just like on the night he proposed, everything seemed to melt away and his eyes were fixed only on her. She looked beautiful, like on that night too. In a flowing white pure silk wedding dress, a veil covered her face but he could still make out her gorgeous eyes and lips. Her hair was in a crown of curls around her head and flowed down to her shoulders. He felt like the luckiest man alive. After exchanging vows, pledging their love and sealing it with a kiss, Ron knew that he’d made the right choice in asking Hermione to be his wife and regretted not asking her sooner. I’ll make it up to her. He thought fiercely. She deserves it.
After the wedding ceremony and tons of pictures were taken, it was off to the wedding reception where the wizards and witches could change into their dress-robes. Ron’s were of course lace and frill-free and Hermione’s were as nice as the ones she wore to the Yule ball, if not nicer. Ron became even more amused at the DJ who played music and sang along and danced to songs he’d never heard of and the Grangers and their relatives had to listen to really weird music as well.
After dancing for what seemed like a very long time, Ron and Hermione relaxed at the table with Harry and Ginny.
“Harry? There’s something I should tell you.” Hermione heard Ginny say. She turned to Hermione who glanced at her and then back to Harry. Ron turned towards his sister too, frowning slightly. He noticed the change in her voice. Harry was still a little out of it after being spun around and around by Teddy Lupin.
“Hm? What?” he said looking up, his elbows on the table as he massaged his temples, trying to get rid of the dizzying sensation.
“I said there’s something I should tell you.” Ginny repeated, leaning forward across the table towards him. Harry seemed to pick up her tone of voice this time and his eyes snapped open, looking intently at her.
Ginny pried Harry’s hands off his face and held them within her own.   “Harry- I’m pregnant.” Ginny’s whole face turned bright red. Ron, who’d been listening in, turned equally red and stood up very quickly knocking his chair over.
“Harry! My baby sister!” he choked and then glared at his sister. “And you! You let him do this to-“
“Ronald.” Hermione said dangerously. Ron rounded on Hermione, his face turning a variety of color and mixes of emotions. “Harry and Ginny are MARRIED. Get over it.”
Ron opened his mouth, couldn’t think of how to respond and shut it. Harry and Ginny had completely ignored this, their hands still grasped together.
“A baby?” Harry asked softly. Ginny nodded. “How long have you known?”
“A little while.” Ginny said evasively.
     “How long?” Harry prodded.
“About a month, maybe two.” Ginny said looking at her hands.
“Ginny, why didn’t you tell me?” Harry breathed, leaning back in his chairs and stopping short as Ginny still held onto his hands.
“I was worried, I wasn’t sure. I WANTED to be sure and-“ Ginny looked over at Ron and Hermione but mostly at Ron.
     “Of course.” Harry smirked.
“I didn’t want to tell you because I knew you’d want to tell everyone and of course I want to tell everyone too but I wanted to wait a little longer-.”
Harry nodded. Sensing that the worst was over, Hermione got up and hugged them both.
“Congratulations! Are you going to check what gender it will be when you can?”
“No.” Harry said at once. Ginny looked at him and understood right away. “If it’s a boy, it’ll be James, and if it’s a girl-“
“It will be Lily.” Ginny grinned. Harry returned her smile in an embarrassed sort of way.
“Isn’t that a little-? I mean- Harry, your parents names, won't that be… a little um-?” Hermione mumbled.
“It’s alright Hermione. I don’t mind. Harry must have his reasons.” Ginny said looking much more at peace.
“It is odd.” Ron said suddenly. They all looked at him. He smiled. “That is a real shocker though, thanks this day will be even more memorable.” He gave Ginny a small irritated look and she returned the favor. Ron got up and patted Harry on the back. “At least she ended up with you.”
“And Hermione with you.” Harry said slyly.
Ron grunted and stalked off towards the DJ booth.
“Harry? What did you do?” Ginny asked, her eyes growing wide.
“What? Why are you so-?” Harry said completely nonplussed.
“Attention everyone!” Ron spoke from the booth in a microphone.
     “Oh no.” Harry moaned.
“Hermione and I really should be getting going but in the mean time, Harry and Ginny have some news they would like to share.” Ron continued.
     “Ron! Don’t-!” Ginny wailed.
“Am I getting grandchildren?!” shrieked Mrs. Weasley from somewhere in the crowd.
There was s short pause. Ginny hurried over to the booth and unable to tell a downright lie, “-Yes.”
“So long everyone!” Ron said over Ginny’s shoulder into the microphone. He ran back to Hermione and the two ran off while their families confronted Harry and Ginny.
“Ron! That was sort of rude!” Hermione said crossly as they made their way out the building.
“No, it was fitting.” Said Ron with a mysterious grin.
     “What?” Hermione said, slightly confused.
“More spotlight for Harry, I prefer being in the sidelines.” Ron said winking.
     “Oh Ron.” Hermione said laughing.
And the two of them, now husband and wife set off to enjoy their honeymoon in the tropics, something Ron had done to surprise Hermione to make up somewhat for his two years of putting her in doubt and denial. The shame or guilt may never leave him for unintentionally putting her through that, he didn’t want to forget but he also did wanted to as well. He would shower her with affection and love and never ever let her go through anything like that again.
Please READ This - heh heh it's been a while since I've done some good old fan fiction, this is my 2nd or 3rd attempt at a RonxHerm fic though, I didn't post the others but I rather like how this turned out and it was totally random too :O_o: yah I know I should be doing stuffs I owe but after looking at the pic I drew I was like now I HAVE to write something for it!
